Paul

Paul crouched down next to Nonna, who had wrapped herself in one of the blankets over his jacket and her housecoat. “Don’t worry, Taviano will get to us soon,” he said with great confidence.

“What makes you think this…this gay vampire will risk his life for you?” Gianni asked in a scathing voice.

“He loves me. Like you used to, only without conditions,” Paul retorted.

“So uncool, Uncle Gianni,” Luca put in. “Gay, straight, everything in between. It’s all beautiful, man. Love in any form is beautiful.”

“Are you stoned right now?” Gianni demanded. “We’re being held prisoner, we’re probably all going to be dead soon, and you’re talking about love?”

“I had just taken a really good gummy when that Jet Li-wannabe grabbed me.”

“You got any more gummies?” Sofia asked. “I think I’d rather not be thinking the things I’m thinking right now.”

“Sorry, cuz, I put the tin away just before.”

“Paulie, are you sure it’s love?” Nonna sounded troubled.

“Of course it is!” Paul protested. “You’ve met Taviano. There isn’t an insincere bone in his hot body.”

“I didn’t know he was Taviano Adelfio,” Nonna said, the last name sounding like a curse in her mouth. “The pain he caused my grandfather. I don’t know, Paulie. These creatures seem awfully fixated on our family. Now it turns out Taviano was not only with my grandfather but also my grandson. Couldn’t it be that Taviano is with you for the same reason these other vampires took us?”

“That… Well, I don’t even know what to say about that,” Paul huffed and turned away to look up at the bank of windows. “It’s ridiculous,” he added for good measure.

He wished his voice hadn’t cracked at the end there. Because suddenly he was remembering last Christmas Eve, when he’d been bleeding out on that rooftop. He’d seen Taviano going down on his knees as three vampires tried to kill him, and then he’d felt it when the bloodbeast inside had taken over. The ichor in Paul’s body had responded like an orchestra tuning up to the 1812 Overture. The thing zipping around the rooftop in Taviano’s body, power almost tangible in the air as it dispatched two of the attackers, had been terrifying.

And then it had turned and looked at him. There was a moment as Paul struggled to his feet, neck and chest wet with his own blood, when he’d been sure the thing was going to attack him next. Their eyes had met, and whoever or whatever was behind those eyes… Well, it hadn’t been Taviano.

And then, suddenly, it was again. The beast had withdrawn or retreated or whatever it did, and Taviano was back, rushing across the rooftop to hold Paul tight and sob with relief that he was alive.

Taviano loved him, Paul had zero doubts about that. But the bloodbeast? Who really knew how and why it had somehow brought Taviano thousands of miles to Boston to connect with the descendant of his onetime boyfriend Calogero. Okay, not boyfriend, but hookup at least.

“Find me, Taviano,” he whispered to the wall, suddenly cold.
